The site has deliberately been split into numerous pages of medium size in order to facilitate downloading. Even so, due to the high graphics content, loading may sometimes appear slow, although other factors such as ISP bandwidth and internet traffic will obviously have a bearing on download speed.

See you in court:
The Potts family of Mannington Hall, Norfolk

1584 – 1737

by
William and Maggie Vaughan-Lewis

Now available!

The Potts family owned the beautiful 15th century moated hall at Mannington for 150 years but who were they? This detailed history traces their rise from yeoman stock to Baronets and covers much of southern and eastern England with a focus on North Norfolk. The intricate interweaving by marriage and trade links of gentry families across the country is perfectly demonstrated by this single family. Their success - peaking with Sir John Potts's important role in the civil war - and later decline is described using many never-before published sources. With nearly 700 pages, fully referenced to fascinating Chancery court papers in the National Archives and local archives across the country, this is a major addition to studies of local communities in the early modern period.

Good Neighbours:

Itteringham, Norfolk in the 18th Century

by

William and Maggie Vaughan-Lewis

Now available!

Not the usual kind of village history, this book does not attempt to cover more than the ‘long 18 th century' in the small rural village of Itteringham in north Norfolk. Meticulously researched from original archives, the story of village life - the fields and houses, the rich and the poor, landowners and tradesmen - comes to life in this beautifully presented volume. Well-illustrated with photographs, diagrams and maps, the rise of the local Robins family and their kinsmen the Bells of Oulton are described in detail (with family trees to guide the reader through the generations). As the founders of the 1728 meeting house at Oulton, these two non-conformist families dominated the local area for over 100 years. As the bloodlines ran dry, their farms and cottages were absorbed into the major estates of Blickling and Wolterton and the extraordinary period of independent entrepreneurialism came to an end.
