1 NOTE It would appear from the lands left him that he was the eldest son of John. Thomas Copeman the elder made his will and died in 1616. Themelthorpe registers do not survive before 1700, so we are completely reliant on a few ATs and this and subseq

2 CONT Pehaps at a guess his wife came from the Knapton area and they inherited land there. No registers survive there this early and so far we have drawn a blank on trying to work out exactly how he came to be there and whether they had any more child
2 CONC ren than Thomas and William. We think there were only two sons as the mother's will mentions no other children. There are a clutch of other Copemans in Yarmouth in the early to mid 17C who could come from Richard, or from someone else altogether
2 CONC . At a guess maybe we are seeing an influx of Kopmans from the low contries in both Yarmouth and Norwich. Certainly it is very hard to find any Copemans in either place before 1600, lending credence to the idea that there was an immigration sour

2 CONC n Copeman - right sort of age (and even fits 'the younger' assumption), right trade, eldest son Thomas. Pockthorpe could well be the hamlet of that name between Lyng and Sparham and thus very local. Any better theories?

2 CONT However, deeds for properties in Sharrington in the NRO (AYL 354) show Thoms Copeman of Sharrington worsted weaver. One in 1661 appears to be reinforcing his own marriage settlement and has Robert C of Foxley butcher as one of those involved i
2 CONC n the multi part transaction. The inference is that he has title to the land in some way. It looks as though he is the Robert of Barton Bendish and Thomas's brother. Their father had died before the deed was written. Robert as the likely elder s
2 CONC on would have been involved in ensuring his brother's title to family lands involved in the settlement. This all seems very likely, but cannot be taken as absolutely certain. No other Copemans are involved in the deed though. It also supports th
2 CONC e idea that the Foxley contingent were yeomen doing well as both farmers and butchers in a parallel to the the Themelthorpe pattern. Both Robert and Thomas appear to do well as their 9 and 8 hearths respectively in the 1663-64 hearth tax in Bart
2 CONC on Bendish and Sharrington demonstrate. This number of hearths means a substantial manor house.

2 CONT The AYL deeds also show that Thomas married at least twice. It seems as though his wife was Margaret in an admission in Sharrington of 1648. Margaret is still his wife in the 1661 deed. Although one the next year does not mention a wife, so sh
2 CONC e might have died 1661-2. It seems likely therefore that in the 13 or more years of marriage she bore his children. An April 1664 deed is effectively a jointure to his new wife the widow Frances Allen of Brinton. A Peter Critoste(?) involved i
